Her son, Jonathan Escalante, reported that Cruz, originally from Honduras and living in the U.S. for nearly two decades, had been avoiding work due to increased immigration enforcement. Escalante is now the sole caregiver for his 9-year-old sister, both U.S. citizens, and fears being detained himself. The League of United Latin American Citizens is exploring legal action to halt such detentions and has set up a GoFundMe for Cruz’s family.
