After Assad's fall, the task of unearthing the dead from Syria's mass graves is just beginning

Bones are visible in mass graves around Syria, including in Najha, where tens of thousands of bodies may be buried, according to former U.S. ambassador Stephen Rapp. Organizations are working to document and identify officials involved in war crimes, as more than 150,000 Syrians are still missing after disappearing into Assad’s prisons. With Assad’s fall, efforts are underway to secure and eventually excavate mass grave sites to gather samples for identification and preserve discovered documents, while residents and medical teams have begun uncovering remains in other locations, hoping to find missing loved ones.
