On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, with humans being the only reported species affected by the virus. Genetic analyses initially linked horseshoe bats as the likely hosts of SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, with no evidence of transmission to other animals. However, within two weeks, Belgium reported the first case of a domestic cat being infected, suggesting potential interspecies transmission.
