Essendon’s talismanic ruck, Sam Draper, is set to make his return against Sydney on Saturday night. However, coach Brad Scott stopped short of confirming Darcy Parish’s selection, even if he is deemed fit to play.
Scott anticipates Parish being given the green light by the Bombers’ medical team for the SCG clash, but his inclusion in the team will depend on his performance in Wednesday’s training session.
Scott mentioned that Ben Hobbs, a former top 10 draft pick, will soon return to the senior team, whether it’s this week or in the near future. Additionally, Dylan Shiel is likely to spend more time in the VFL as he continues his recovery from a foot injury.
Draper, eager to face the Swans, is expected to partner Todd Goldstein against Brodie Grundy on Saturday, according to Scott. “We have some forced changes this week, but we have options to consider. Draper is definitely in contention,” Scott stated.
“After undergoing a conservative long-term rehab, and considering that we missed him last year, we are determined to have him back at full strength once he returns,” Scott added.
The decision to send Draper for major groin surgery in September was a strategic one to ensure his optimal recovery, according to Scott.
Scott emphasized the importance of maintaining the “Essendon edge” in his players following a spirited display against Hawthorn, while also being disciplined and in control.
