Afghan refugee shares experiences five years after Taliban takeover

It has been five years since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan following the collapse of the government in August 2021. In this period, Canada has accepted over 60,000 Afghan refugees, including Farkhunda Hashimy, who moved to Saskatoon with her family in 2023. Hashimy was a high school student in Kabul when the Taliban’s regime barred girls from attending school and pursuing higher education. Under the Taliban, girls can no longer attend school past Grade 6, and women face severe restrictions on education, employment, and personal freedoms. Natasha Arnpriester, a senior legal counsel, highlighted the drastic reduction in women’s rights and the Taliban’s numerous decrees affecting daily life. Hashimy’s family escaped to Pakistan before arriving in Canada, where she expressed her gratitude to the 30 Birds Foundation for their role in her family’s resettlement, allowing her to feel safe and hopeful for her future.

Why It Matters

The situation in Afghanistan remains critical as the Taliban imposes severe restrictions on women’s rights, making it the only country to ban women from secondary and higher education. Prior to the takeover, over 100,000 women were pursuing higher education, and women held significant roles in government and society. The United Nations has described the current state of women’s rights in Afghanistan as the world’s most severe crisis, with ongoing protests facing harsh repercussions. The international community continues to grapple with the implications of the Taliban’s rule, particularly concerning human rights and the treatment of women and girls.
