ACLU to Monitor Election Certification in $50 Million Midterm Initiative

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) plans to invest over $50 million in the 2026 midterm elections, with half of the funds dedicated to ensuring proper election administration amid concerns about President Donald Trump’s increased influence over the electoral process. The ACLU aims to train and deploy over 100 paid staff and more than 3,000 volunteers to promote voter access and oversee ballot counting in critical battleground states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. This initiative includes monitoring election canvassing and certification, a new focus for the organization, which is currently involved in over 80 lawsuits related to voting rights. The other half of the funding will support down-ballot races and ballot measure campaigns, as part of a broader strategy to safeguard democratic processes against perceived threats from the current administration.

Why It Matters

The ACLU’s significant investment reflects ongoing tensions surrounding election integrity and voter access in the United States, particularly in light of Trump’s executive actions that have aimed to centralize control over election processes. Historically, control of elections has been primarily a state and local responsibility, yet recent federal interventions have raised concerns about potential overreach. The ACLU’s proactive measures, including legal challenges and monitoring efforts, indicate a response to perceived threats to democratic norms and voting rights, particularly in states with contentious political climates. This investment marks the largest election-related expenditure in the ACLU’s history and underscores the heightened importance of safeguarding electoral integrity in the current political landscape.
