A San Diego man, Dwight Rhone, has been charged with three additional murder counts, bringing the total number of murder charges against him to four. The new charges relate to the deaths of Michael Brown, Ronald Johnken, and Herierto Ruiz. Investigators disclosed that two of these victims were found years prior, with Brown’s remains discovered in December 2023 under a home where Rhone previously lived. Johnken’s body was located in a creek in 2002, while Ruiz was found strangled in 1993. Rhone, 74, has pleaded not guilty to the new charges, and his attorney has yet to comment. The San Diego County District Attorney attributed the new charges to diligent investigative work that linked Rhone to several cold cases.

Why It Matters

These charges are significant as they highlight the ongoing impact of cold cases in the criminal justice system, where previously unsolved murders can be reexamined as new evidence emerges. The ability to connect Rhone to multiple victims over decades illustrates the challenges law enforcement faces in resolving long-standing homicide cases. District Attorney Summer Stephan’s comments point to the importance of persistent investigative efforts in uncovering critical links that can lead to new charges. Rhone’s alleged crimes have drawn attention not only for their severity but also for the potential to resolve other unsolved cases in the San Diego area, prompting authorities to seek information on additional victims linked to Rhone.
