Domestic abuse survivor fears attacker may be released under new rules

A domestic abuse survivor, Helen Duncanson, has expressed her fears over the potential early release of her abuser, Michael Boyes, under a controversial government policy. Duncanson, 41, received notification that Boyes, who is currently serving a three-and-a-half-year sentence for sustained abuse, including severe physical violence, might be eligible for early release. Boyes, from Pickering, Yorkshire, was sentenced after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including assault and coercive behavior, having previously faced over 20 convictions for domestic violence. Duncanson, who has begun to rebuild her life since Boyes’ conviction, is now alarmed at the prospect of his early release, which could occur as soon as September 2027. She emphasized that victims should not be an afterthought in the early release process and requires clear information and support regarding their safety.

Why It Matters

The issue of early release for violent offenders highlights significant concerns regarding victim safety and the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in addressing domestic abuse. The government has faced scrutiny over its early release policies, particularly following high-profile cases such as that of PC Andrew Harper’s killers, whose sentences were deemed ineligible for early release. Domestic abuse survivors often experience long-lasting trauma, and any uncertainty about the release of their abusers can exacerbate their fears and hinder their recovery. Ensuring that victims receive adequate support and protection is crucial for their well-being and confidence in the justice system.
