Tyler Vargas-Andrews criticizes lack of support for Marines after Abbey Gate attack

Retired Marine Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews, a survivor of the Abbey Gate bombing during the evacuation from Afghanistan, spoke on “The Big Weekend Show” about the chaotic conditions faced by U.S. Marines at Hamid Karzai International Airport. He stated that the Marines had to improvise due to lack of preparation and support, despite receiving warnings about potential dangers. Vargas-Andrews, who lost his right arm and left leg in the August 26, 2021, suicide bombing, emphasized that the situation could have been better managed and called for accountability for the failures leading up to the attack. He noted that troops received intelligence about a threat but there were no proactive measures taken to mitigate it. Although he welcomed recent recognition for the Marines involved in the evacuation, Vargas-Andrews stressed that accountability remains elusive.

Why It Matters

The 2021 Abbey Gate bombing resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members and many Afghan civilians amid a frantic evacuation process as the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan. The incident highlighted significant lapses in planning and execution by U.S. military and government officials during the withdrawal from Afghanistan, which had been ongoing since 2001. The chaotic evacuation and subsequent attack drew widespread criticism and raised questions about the effectiveness of U.S. foreign policy and military strategy in the region. The ongoing discussion of accountability reflects broader concerns about the implications of the withdrawal and its impact on U.S. relations with allies and the safety of Afghan partners.
