Starlink Satellite Explodes, Creates Trackable Debris

SpaceX reported an anomaly with one of its Starlink satellites, likely due to a small explosion, which caused venting of the propulsion tank and a decrease in altitude by about 4 km. The satellite, largely intact but tumbling, is expected to reenter Earth’s atmosphere within weeks, posing no risk to the ISS. This incident follows a near-collision with a Chinese satellite, highlighting the need for better coordination among satellite operators. Starlink currently has nearly 9,300 active satellites, comprising about 65% of all orbiting spacecraft.
