John Profumo admitted to a “sordid” affair with 19-year-old model Christine Keeler, describing her as “ill-educated” and “simple” in newly released files. The affair, which took place behind his wife Valerie Hobson’s back, became a national scandal due to its implications for national security, as Keeler was also involved with a Soviet spy. Profumo resigned as Secretary of State for War in 1963 after lying to Parliament about the relationship. He later claimed he cut ties with Keeler after being warned of potential security risks.
