Filipino tribe resists development of smart city on former US base
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Philippine government is developing New Clark City, a multibillion-dollar “smart city” on the site of the former Clark Air Base, aiming to ease congestion in Manila and attract foreign investment. This project threatens the Indigenous Aeta village of Sapang Kawayan, where residents fear displacement as their ancestral land is claimed for development. Despite efforts to secure land rights through a Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title, many Aetas face eviction. The city, designed to accommodate 1.2 million people, is expected to take 30 years to complete while the BCDA has offered minimal compensation to affected families.
