Elections for the president of the United States have historically been lengthy and complex, with the first election in 1789 taking over two months to certify. Hewn Bakery in Illinois is educating people about this process through a special “Election” cake, inspired by a 200-year-old recipe. Co-owners Ellen King and Julie Matthei have adapted the recipe for modern bakers, offering the cake for pre-order with proceeds going to Common Cause, a pro-democracy group, and will be available on Election Day.
