At Least 70 Killed as Syria’s Security Forces Clash With Assad Loyalists

At least 70 people were killed in clashes between the new authorities in Syria and Assad loyalists in Latakia and Tartus Provinces, marking the bloodiest skirmishes since the collapse of the Assad government. The new government deployed more security personnel to regain control over towns and villages seized by armed gunmen, urging surrender or facing consequences. The coastal provinces, stronghold of the Alawite minority, have posed a challenge for the new Sunni Muslim-led government seeking to consolidate power and facing escalating tensions with remnants of the Assad regime.
