The Emergency Consultative Group of Africa CDC, chaired by Professor Salim Abdool Karim, has recommended maintaining Mpox as a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security due to rising case numbers, a new highly transmissible variant, and challenges in vaccine supply. The outbreak has surged across Africa, spreading to more countries and facing surveillance gaps, vaccination issues, and underreporting, exacerbated by suspended foreign aid. Africa CDC will intensify efforts to improve vaccine delivery, surveillance, and outbreak monitoring, with the Incident Management Support Team collaborating to enhance vaccination and diagnostic access while supporting Africa CDC’s leadership in the response.
