At the 2023 Oscars, Angela Bassett lost the Best Actress In A Supporting Role award for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere All At Once. Despite feeling deserving of the honor, Angela was surprised by the backlash she received for showing disappointment. This marked her second Academy Award nomination, with her previous nomination being in 1994 for What’s Love Got to Do with It. Angela later received an honorary Oscar and used her acceptance speech to advocate for recognition of trailblazing Black female actors.
