After a spate of problematic bills, Gary council wants to create legislative committee

During Indiana’s 2025 legislative session, Gary Common Council members aim to increase transparency between legislators and constituents due to bills targeting the city. Councilman Darren Washington proposed creating a state legislative committee to inform residents about legislation impacting Gary, including House Bill 1001 altering the airport authority board. Council President Lori Latham has raised concerns about House Bill 1448 requiring Gary to pay millions to other cities, while other members have voiced worries about House Bill 1136, calling for a school district dissolution.
