Former Plaid Cymru leader has died, aged 78

Former Plaid Cymru leader and Senedd Presiding Officer Lord Elis-Thomas has passed away at the age of 78 after a short illness, his family confirmed. He led Plaid Cymru from 1984 to 1991, served as an MP, and became the first presiding officer of the Welsh Assembly in 1999. Known for his independence, he later left the party in 2016 and served as a minister in Welsh governments before retiring from politics in 2021.
