Boom, the startup developing supersonic aircraft, achieved a milestone as its test plane, XB-1 “Baby Boom,” broke the sound barrier over the Mojave Desert, reaching Mach 1.1 at 35,000 feet. The plane broke the sound barrier three times, marking the first time a civilian aircraft did so in the US. Boom has been conducting tests since 2020 and is working on a passenger jet, Overture, with a planned top speed of Mach 1.7, aiming to cut travel times in half for those who can afford it.
