Daniel Chapo has been inaugurated as Mozambique’s president amid controversy over disputed election results, with opposition leader Venancio Mondlane vowing daily protests for Chapo’s entire term. Mondlane accused the government of suppressing peace and reported that his team members were shot with live ammunition during recent demonstrations, resulting in over 300 deaths since the protests began in October. International observers, including the EU mission, noted irregularities in the election and some civil society groups petitioned the African Union to withhold recognition of Chapo’s presidency, while some African leaders, like South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, attended the inauguration.
