Decades after Frelimo’s promise of liberation from Portuguese colonization, Mozambique now faces widespread dissatisfaction under President Daniel Chapo, who assumed leadership amidst widespread criticism of a fraudulent election. Tens of thousands protested the inauguration, leading to violent clashes with police and at least 300 deaths, reflecting a growing unrest with Frelimo’s leadership. Chapo vows to address citizens’ concerns by cutting government spending and reaching out to opposition leaders, such as Venâncio Mondlane, who advocates for reforms and continues to call for protests to pressure the government for change.
