Experts urge B.C. to rethink wildfire response as L.A. battles fires

In response to the ongoing wildfires in Southern California, experts warn that both British Columbia and Los Angeles lack sufficient firefighters to combat the increasingly extreme wildfire seasons, with over 10,000 structures destroyed and 130,000 people evacuated in L.A. alone. José Martí, a UBC engineering professor, emphasizes the urgent need for B.C. to strengthen its wildfire management strategy to prevent a similar crisis, as climate change contributes to longer, more severe wildfire seasons. Kevin Hanna, an associate professor at UBC, anticipates that B.C. should prepare for more challenging conditions ahead as wildfires start earlier, last longer, and become harder to control.
