A derelict 115-year-old building in downtown Vancouver, once a grand hotel and later social housing, is set to be demolished due to severe structural deterioration, including a leaky roof and rotting framing. City officials have ordered Holborn Properties to demolish the building within three weeks, with preparations starting on Jan. 17 and demolition scheduled to begin on Saturday and continue 24 hours a day until Monday morning. Despite being listed on the city’s heritage registry, the building is not protected by heritage designation laws, leading to disappointment from the city and exploration of new measures to prevent neglect of vacant buildings.
