A record number of migrants reached the Canary Islands by sea in 2024, Spain says

In 2024, a record-breaking 46,843 migrants arrived at the Spanish Canary Islands via the Atlantic migration route, surpassing the previous year’s numbers by 17%. Despite efforts by Spain and the EU to address the crisis, migrants continue to travel over 1,000 miles by sea from West African nations to escape conflict and poverty. The route is considered one of the deadliest in the world, with over 10,000 deaths reported in 2024 alone.
