Biden Portrays Next Phase of Economic Agenda as Middle-Class Lifeline
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

President Biden highlighted his efforts to revive the economy in his State of the Union address. He emphasized his plans for a second term focused on economic equity, including raising taxes on corporations and the wealthy while reducing costs for the middle class.

Biden proposed policies to benefit the middle class, such as making housing more affordable for first-time home buyers. He aimed to distinguish his economic agenda from that of Republicans, particularly former President Trump, who focused on tax cuts and deregulation.

Many of Biden’s proposals require congressional approval and rely on Democrats gaining control of the House and Senate. He also outlined plans for federal agencies to help lower costs for items like housing amidst ongoing inflation concerns.

From taxes to housing and inflation, Biden addressed key economic issues affecting Americans.

Raising Taxes on the Rich

Biden expanded on his tax proposals, calling for higher taxes on corporations and the wealthiest Americans. He suggested raising the corporate minimum tax to 21% and implementing a 25% minimum tax rate for billionaires, aiming to generate $500 billion over a decade.

He criticized the 2017 tax cuts, questioning the need for further tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations.

Help for the Housing Market

Biden proposed measures to make housing more affordable, including tax credits and assistance for first-time home buyers. He also called for incentives to promote affordable housing construction and renovation.

He urged Congress to provide credits for first-time buyers and down payment assistance for certain home buyers.

Biden introduced grants and incentives to encourage affordable housing construction, along with measures to address unfair closing costs and rental fees. He also focused on protecting consumers from deceptive practices like “shrinkflation.”

Protecting Consumers From “Shrinkflation”

Biden emphasized his efforts to combat inflation and reduce unnecessary charges and fees for consumers, saving them money.

Building and Buying American

Biden highlighted achievements in infrastructure development, clean energy, and technology. He also criticized Republicans for opposing these policies while benefiting from them.

Tackling China

Biden prioritized improving economic relations with China and reducing reliance on Chinese products. He emphasized efforts to counter China’s unfair trade practices and maintain technological superiority.

He refuted claims that the U.S. is falling behind China, asserting that America’s economy is strong and resilient.
