A recent analysis by the Center for International Environmental Law revealed that 220 fossil fuel and chemical industry lobbyists are attending the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to negotiate a Global Plastics Treaty, prompting concerns from Greenpeace Africa’s Hellen Kahaso Dena and Graham Forbes. Dena emphasizes the need for member states to resist industry influence and prioritize environmental protection, while Forbes criticizes the lobbyists’ profit-driven motives and calls for an agreement that prioritizes human health and sustainability. Greenpeace is urging immediate action from member states to ensure a treaty that reduces plastic production and addresses plastic pollution effectively.
