New Zealanders help save about 30 whales after a pod strands on a beach

On Ruakākā Beach in New Zealand, over 30 stranded pilot whales were successfully refloated with the help of conservation workers and residents, though four whales did not survive. The Department of Conservation praised the community’s efforts in saving the whales and conducted a Māori cultural ceremony for the deceased whales. New Zealand, a whale stranding hotspot, has recorded over 5,000 such incidents since 1840, with geography possibly playing a role in these events.
