On February 28, 1947, the Kuomintang (KMT) government violently cracked down on protesters in Taiwan, leading to the 228 Massacre and the start of the White Terror period. Decades later, the KMT still plays a major political role in Taiwan, with differing views on historical memory and identity between the KMT and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The KMT’s support base, largely made up of waishengren, continues to advocate for a unified China, while the DPP views Taiwan as an independent state, shaping the ongoing political landscape and policy decisions in Taiwan.
