New mpox variant identified in four UK patients in first cluster outside Africa

British health officials have identified four cases of a new, more infectious variant of mpox that originated in Congo, marking the first cluster of illness outside of Africa. The risk to the public is deemed low, with the cases being treated in a London hospital after traveling to African countries. The new mpox variant causes milder symptoms and has spread to multiple countries, resulting in over 43,000 suspect cases and 1000 deaths in Africa.
