The AU is addressing the adverse effects of climate change on Africa’s stability and development, emphasizing the urgent need for coordinated international action due to Africa’s high vulnerability and limited adaptation capacity. The AU is developing a Common African Position to empower member states with policies informed by scientific data, climate financing, and integration of climate sensitivity into peacebuilding efforts. Collaboration between the AU Peace and Security Council and the UN Security Council is crucial in integrating climate-related security risks into peacebuilding efforts, capacity building, and training for peacebuilders, and ensuring peacebuilding efforts are informed by climate science and local environmental conditions.
