Ukrainians Express Concerns

As the anniversary of Putin’s aggression approached, feelings of uncertainty and frustration were palpable in Kyiv. Ukrainians had questions about why Western sanctions on Russia seemed ineffective, how Moscow continued to acquire missile components from Western companies, why they had to continually request weapons, and why the U.S. had not yet pushed through a crucial new aid package for Ukraine.

“We appreciate the support from the United States, but it’s frustrating when Democrats redirect us to Republicans and vice versa,” Ukrainian MP Oleksandra Ustinova expressed during a separate conference in Kyiv. “While we value European support, we recognize the essential role of the USA. We urgently need anti-aircraft defenses and ongoing assistance.”

“Why is it so challenging to receive the support we need? Our top priorities are air defense systems and long-range missiles,” Ustinova emphasized.

U.S. Congressman Jim Costa addressed the conference, highlighting the need to educate Americans, including members of Congress, on the impact of the war in Ukraine and the importance of a Ukrainian victory for U.S. interests.

“I firmly believe that we must and will approve an additional aid package for Ukraine. It may not be easy or popular, but in the coming weeks, the U.S. response will demonstrate our commitment to protecting security and democratic values,” Costa stated.

Oleksiy Danilov, Ukraine’s security and defense council secretary, asserted at the conference that the West’s fear of Russia was hindering Ukraine’s ability to succeed.

“The West is uncertain about how to handle Russia, which is preventing us from achieving victory. Russia uses fear tactics and manipulation against the West. However, if you show fear towards a dog, it will attack you,” Danilov warned.

“By failing to stand up to autocratic Russia, the West is not only losing to them but also to other autocratic regimes worldwide,” Danilov concluded.
