Named after Queen Victoria, Queenstown is one of South Africa’s most interesting towns. It was founded in 1853 and boasts a rich history.

It also has some interesting activities in store, especially for outdoor enthusiasts. This beautiful town and its surrounding areas are worth exploring when in the Eastern Cape.

Here are some things to do in and around Queenstown:

Tsolwana Hiking Trail

Do you seek the hiking experience of a lifetime? Look no further than the Tsolwana Trail which is located in the Tsolwana Game Reserve. It is the place where hikers are treated to game-watching, as well as culture gems such as San caves and paintings.

The 22km long trail takes approximately 2 days to complete and bush camp accommodation is available. The hike is ideal for moderate hikers. The Reserve is located between Queenstown, Whittlesea and Tarkastad.

Queens Casino and Hotel

Queens Casino is the place to be for all who wish to try their luck. It is home to over 150 slots and 7 tables. You can enjoy some Roulette, Black Jack and Poker.

There are also astounding mystery jackpots, as well as a variety of in-house promotions which take place regularly. If you are travelling with your young ones, worry not. There are also a number of games for children to choose from. Moreover, there is a crèche which is capable of handling 20 children at a time.

Ruth Lock Shell Art Gallery

The Ruth Lock Shell Art Gallery is a paradise for art lovers and history buffs. It is the place to be if you would like to see the work of one of South Africa’s unsung artists.

When visiting the site, you will get the opportunity to see the home in which the late Winifred Ruth Lock lived from the day she was born.

The house has been converted into three galleries. One contains a myriad of sculptures made mostly out of sea shells. The second contains a series of intricate paintings, while the third gallery is a collection called ‘Broken Things’. It consists of embellished items which Ruth collected from rubbish dumps. Visiting the art gallery provides the chance to learn more about her life, passion and devotion.
