Father’s fear as son dangles from cable car 900 feet above ground

Three years ago, Umraiz Khan faced the unimaginable when his 17-year-old son, Irfan, became trapped in a malfunctioning cable car 900 feet above the ground in Pakistan’s Allai valley. While on his way to school, Irfan, along with seven other boys, found themselves suspended for hours as rescue efforts struggled against harsh winds and limited resources. Umraiz recounted his harrowing experience, fearing he would have to collect his son’s remains from below. Eventually, Irfan was the first to be rescued via a harness, followed hours later by the others using a zip line. Despite their survival, both Irfan and Umraiz have vowed never to use a cable car again, and the broken cable car still leaves their community isolated, impacting access to education and healthcare.

Why It Matters

The incident highlights significant safety concerns regarding cable car infrastructure in remote areas, particularly in developing countries. With limited access to reliable transportation, communities are often cut off from essential services such as education and healthcare, as seen in this case. The failure of the cable car also raises questions about the adequacy of emergency response mechanisms in rural regions, especially during crises. These factors underscore the need for improved safety measures and infrastructure investment to prevent similar incidents in the future.
