St George plans Brazilian rare earths processing facility

St George Mining has entered a significant partnership with the State of Minas Gerais and the Lima & Pergher Group to establish a rare earths processing center in Brazil. This collaboration, formalized through a “Protocol of Intent,” aims to support Brazil’s national strategy for a domestic “mine-to-magnet” supply chain, diminishing reliance on foreign processing amid a global push for non-Chinese rare earth supplies. The proposed center will focus on refining various rare earth feedstocks into materials for magnet manufacturing and will be located at an existing industrial site in Uberlândia, which has essential infrastructure. St George will leverage its expertise and resources from its Araxá project, which recently reported an upgraded mineral resource estimate of 111.2 million tonnes at 3.57% total rare earth oxides. The processing facility may also support Brazil’s first permanent magnet factory, the MagBras project.

Why It Matters

This development is critical as it positions Brazil as a key player in the rare earths market, which is increasingly vital for global technology supply chains. Historically, rare earths have been dominated by Chinese production, leading to concerns about supply security. The establishment of a domestic processing center in Brazil could enhance supply chain resilience and promote local economic growth. St George’s partnership highlights the strategic importance of rare earth resources, particularly as demand for high-value materials used in electronics and renewable energy continues to grow.
