For the first time in the Canadian Prairies, researchers are utilizing tiny radio transmitters to track endangered monarch butterflies during their migration from Manitoba to Mexico. The project, a collaboration between the Assiniboine Park Zoo and the Canadian Wildlife Service in Winnipeg, involves tagging 29 monarchs with these transmitters at the Living Prairie Museum. This initiative aims to gather critical data on the migratory patterns of this species, which is facing significant threats due to habitat loss and climate change. The tagged butterflies, one of which has been named Eddie, will provide valuable insights into their journey and survival challenges. This research is crucial for developing effective conservation strategies for monarch butterflies in North America.

Why It Matters

Monarch butterflies are known for their remarkable migration, traveling up to 3,000 miles from Canada to Mexico each year. This species has been declining in population, with estimates indicating a loss of over 90% in some regions, primarily due to habitat destruction, pesticide use, and climate change. Understanding their migration patterns is essential for conservation efforts, as it allows researchers to identify critical habitats and the challenges these butterflies face during their journey. By tracking these butterflies, scientists can gather data that informs policy and conservation measures, ultimately aiming to protect this vital species and its ecosystem.
