FIFA has announced the match schedule for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, which will feature 64 matches across eight venues in Brazil. The iconic Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro is set to host both the tournament’s opening match and the final, further cementing its status in soccer history. This will make the Maracanã one of only a few stadiums worldwide to have hosted both a men’s and a women’s World Cup final, as well as an Olympic men’s and women’s soccer gold medal match. With a capacity of 73,139, the Maracanã has a rich history, having hosted pivotal matches, including the 1950 World Cup final where Brazil faced Uruguay and the 2021 Copa América final against Argentina. The stadium will host nine matches in total during the tournament next summer.

Why It Matters

The Maracanã Stadium is a central landmark in Brazilian soccer, having hosted historic events and matches that have shaped the sport’s legacy in the country. In addition to its role in World Cup history, the stadium was the site of Pelé’s 1,000th goal and Brazil’s first Olympic gold medal in soccer. The venue’s illustrious history includes record attendance figures and significant rivalries, highlighting its importance in both club and international soccer. The 2027 Women’s World Cup presents an opportunity for the Maracanã to further solidify its reputation as a cathedral of soccer by hosting a major international tournament.
