Fewer than 20 vessels transit Strait of Hormuz amid blockades

Fewer than 20 commodity vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, highlighting the ongoing impact of Iranian and US blockades on shipping traffic in this critical energy route. On Sunday, only four vessels crossed, while 13 made the journey on Saturday, according to ship-tracking data from Kpler. This decline follows a Friday total of 16 transits, which included two large crude carriers entering the Gulf with their tracking devices turned off. In the past three days, eight very large gas carriers also traversed the strait, with a notable portion entering empty. The overall traffic remains significantly below normal levels, with the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reporting that vessel transits are approximately 90% lower than pre-conflict figures, largely due to recent attacks leading to vessel route changes.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. The decline in vessel transits reflects heightened tensions and security concerns in the region, particularly following a series of projectile strikes reported since July 6, which have caused damage to multiple vessels. This situation is exacerbated by geopolitical tensions involving Iran and the US, which have led to stricter navigation conditions. The overall reduction in traffic could disrupt global oil supply chains and affect energy markets, underscoring the strait’s importance in international trade and energy security.
