OpenAI Under Safety Review After Launching ChatGPT for Teens

OpenAI has introduced a new version of ChatGPT specifically for teenagers aged 13 to 17, aimed at enhancing safety and appropriateness in interactions. This Teen mode incorporates stronger safeguards against discussions of suicide, self-harm, and explicit content, with the AI actively monitoring user interactions to gauge age. If the system suspects a user has misrepresented their age, it automatically defaults to the Teen mode to prevent exposure to inappropriate material. Additionally, the model encourages healthy usage habits by suggesting breaks after 90 minutes of activity and allowing parents to set “Quiet Hours” and “Study Hours.” However, tech analysts caution that while these measures are designed to protect users, they may not be foolproof and could potentially misidentify adult users as teens. OpenAI’s updates come amidst ongoing lawsuits asserting that prior interactions with ChatGPT have harmed young people.

Why It Matters

The introduction of ChatGPT for Teens coincides with rising concerns about the safety of AI interactions for minors, particularly as nearly a third of American teens reportedly use AI chatbots daily. This new feature aims to address these concerns by providing tailored protections and educational tools. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains under scrutiny, as experts highlight the need for thorough testing to ensure they genuinely enhance user safety. Additionally, ongoing litigation against OpenAI underscores the importance of maintaining robust safeguards in AI technologies, particularly those designed for vulnerable populations like teenagers.
