UC faculty advocate for reinstating SAT and ACT after test-blind policy results

A UCLA sociology professor criticized the University of California’s “test-blind” admissions policy, stating it has not achieved its aim of reducing racial disparities in standardized testing. Gabriel Rossman noted that the elimination of the SAT was intended to promote equity but has instead shown a stagnation in the diversity of incoming classes, particularly among Latino students. Over 3,000 faculty members across the UC system have signed letters advocating for the reinstatement of SAT and ACT scores in admissions. This push follows reports indicating a decline in student preparedness for foundational math courses since the policy’s implementation. The UC Academic Council has initiated a review of standardized testing practices in response to faculty concerns.

Why It Matters

The debate surrounding standardized testing in university admissions reflects broader discussions about equity and academic preparedness in higher education. The University of California’s decision to eliminate the SAT and ACT in 2020 aimed to address perceived biases in standardized testing, but data shows a decrease in academic readiness among students since then. Previous trends indicated a gradual increase in diversity among UC freshmen prior to 2020, underscoring the potential impact of admissions policies on student demographics and preparedness. The ongoing faculty advocacy highlights concerns about maintaining rigorous academic standards while striving for equitable access in admissions.
