Only 3% of Gaza’s agricultural land is accessible and undamaged

The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has reported that 97 percent of cropland in the Gaza Strip is now damaged or inaccessible, following an assessment conducted in collaboration with the UN Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) as of June 24. The report indicates that only 448 hectares of agricultural land remain accessible and undamaged, a significant decrease from 601 hectares recorded in October 2025. Rafah in southern Gaza has experienced the highest levels of inaccessibility, while northern Gaza and the Gaza governorates have suffered the most physical damage. The FAO noted that only 16.6 percent of greenhouse areas remain intact. The organization has warned that ongoing restrictions on land access, alongside shortages of essential agricultural supplies, are obstructing the recovery of the agricultural sector and has called for immediate action to support farmers.

Why It Matters

This situation underscores the severe impact of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has led to widespread destruction of agriculture and food security. The FAO’s findings highlight a drastic decline in accessible farmland, which is critical for the livelihoods of local farmers and the overall economy. Historical tensions and conflicts in the region have repeatedly disrupted agricultural production, worsening food shortages and humanitarian crises. The destruction of infrastructure and access limitations have compounded these challenges, leading to urgent calls for international assistance and intervention to restore agricultural viability and ensure food security for the population.
