While Russia continues its military occupation of Ukraine’s largest nuclear plant and assaults the country’s power infrastructure, Europe and the United States remain reliant on Russian low enriched uranium (LEU) for their nuclear energy needs. Notably, Canadian-owned Westinghouse Electric is among the companies importing LEU from Russia. Although the U.S. imposed a ban on Russian enriched uranium imports in August 2024 to reduce dependence on Russian materials, exceptions exist under the Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act.
