First Nations in northern Ontario hire security to combat drug trafficking

John O’Nabigon, chief of Long Lake #58 First Nation in northwestern Ontario, expressed his heartbreak and anger following the recent overdose death of a young community member, marking the third drug-related death this year. In response to the ongoing drug crisis, O’Nabigon has engaged an Indigenous-run security company to establish checkpoints within the community. This action follows the declaration of a state of emergency in January due to drug trafficking concerns. Long Lake #58 and the nearby Ginoogaming First Nation have since declared a joint state of emergency, with both communities facing heightened violence and drug-related crime, exacerbated by perceived inaction from government and policing agencies. The Thunder Bay district, which includes these communities, has the highest opioid-related death rate in Ontario, nearly five times the provincial average.

Why It Matters

The opioid crisis has significantly impacted First Nations communities in Ontario, with Long Lake #58 and Ginoogaming experiencing alarming rates of drug-related deaths. In recent years, these areas have repeatedly declared states of emergency, highlighting their struggles with drug trafficking and violence. Historical data shows that the Thunder Bay district has consistently reported some of the highest opioid-related death rates in the province. Local leaders are advocating for urgent government intervention to provide resources and address the ongoing crisis affecting their communities.
