HRW reports probable crimes against humanity on Rab’a massacre anniversary

A new report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) reveals that Egyptian security forces likely committed crimes against humanity during the systematic killing of at least 1,150 demonstrators in July and August 2013. The findings are based on a year-long investigation, highlighting that the dispersal of the Rab’a al-Adawiya sit-in on August 14 resulted in at least 817 confirmed deaths, with estimates suggesting the toll could exceed 1,000. The 188-page report, titled “All According to Plan: The Rab’a Massacre and Mass Killings of Protesters in Egypt,” details how police and military forces used live ammunition against largely peaceful demonstrators opposing the military’s coup against President Mohamed Morsy. While some protesters reportedly had firearms, HRW emphasized that this did not justify the disproportionate and premeditated violence used by authorities. The organization interviewed over 200 witnesses and has sought the Egyptian government’s response, but has not received any replies.

Why It Matters

The events of July and August 2013 marked one of the deadliest days for protesters in recent history, reflecting a significant escalation in state violence against dissent in Egypt. Following the military coup that ousted Mohamed Morsy, the government faced widespread protests, leading to violent crackdowns that have continued over the years. Many officials involved in the crackdown remain in power, raising concerns about accountability and human rights in the country. This context is crucial for understanding the ongoing challenges in Egypt regarding political repression and the treatment of dissenting voices.
