MSF warns that engine oil and spare parts restrictions in Gaza endanger essential services

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has raised alarms regarding the worsening energy crisis in the Gaza Strip due to restrictions on the import of engine oil and spare parts. The organization reported that the price of engine oil has skyrocketed by 20 times over the past six months, reaching over $1,300 per liter by the end of July, with concerns about quality and availability. Many healthcare facilities in Gaza depend on generators for power amid ongoing electricity shortages and damage to the electricity infrastructure. MSF emphasized that failures in these generators could severely impact medical services, particularly for patients reliant on life-support systems. The organization’s deputy project coordinator, Ola Bardawil, highlighted the dire consequences for vulnerable patients, including newborns in incubators and individuals needing urgent surgeries.

Why It Matters

The energy crisis in Gaza is compounded by longstanding restrictions and blockades that have limited the availability of essential supplies, including fuel and medical resources. This situation is not new; ongoing conflicts have created a cycle of infrastructure damage and humanitarian needs that frequently overwhelm local healthcare systems. The reliance on generators in hospitals increases the risk of service disruptions, endangering the lives of patients who depend on continuous medical care. Historical tensions and political dynamics in the region contribute to the challenges faced by organizations like MSF in delivering aid and ensuring the safety and health of the population.
