Why Low-Fat Dairy May Not Be Better for Your Health

What You Need to Know
• Researchers at the University of Toronto found full-fat dairy may not contribute to weight gain or health issues.
• The study involved 74 adults with overweight or obesity over a 12-week period, comparing different dairy consumption levels.
• Participants consuming three servings of full-fat dairy daily showed improved blood pressure and nutrient intake.

Harvey Anderson, a professor at the University of Toronto, led research indicating that full-fat dairy products may not be as detrimental to health as previously believed. The study involved 74 adults with overweight or obesity, who were assigned to one of three dietary groups between September 2020 and February 2023. Participants consuming three servings of full-fat dairy daily did not experience significant changes in body weight, body composition, or cholesterol levels compared to those on a low-dairy diet. Additionally, those in the full-fat dairy groups showed improvements in blood pressure and better intake of essential nutrients like calcium and vitamin D. This research challenges longstanding dietary guidelines recommending low-fat dairy products for adults.

Why It Matters

This study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that full-fat dairy can be part of a healthy diet. Historically, dietary guidelines in Canada and the United States have recommended low- or no-fat dairy options, based on concerns about obesity and cardiovascular health. The findings indicate that these guidelines may need to be reevaluated in light of new research. Understanding the implications of full-fat dairy consumption is important for public health recommendations and dietary practices.
