Federal investigation into Marine One safety incident during Trump flight

Aviation officials and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating a safety incident involving the Marine One helicopter carrying President Donald Trump that occurred on Tuesday. As Marine One took off from the Ellipse near the White House around 2:30 p.m. ET, commercial air traffic at nearby Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport was not paused as required by safety protocols. A communication error led to an air traffic controller missing a three-minute notice from Marine One due to simultaneous transmissions. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported a “momentary loss of separation” between Marine One and an American Airlines regional flight, but confirmed that the two aircraft did not come dangerously close. The FAA is reviewing the incident and will take corrective actions as necessary.

Why It Matters

Safety protocols for air traffic around the White House are critical to ensuring the security of the President and the surrounding airspace. The required separation distances between helicopters and commercial aircraft are established to prevent accidents. In this case, the incident underscores the importance of clear communication in air traffic control, especially during high-profile flights. Historical instances of near-misses emphasize the need for strict adherence to air traffic regulations to safeguard both civilian and government flight operations.
