Chih-yu Hsiao, a tourist from Taiwan, experienced a memorable moment during a recent road trip through northern British Columbia, specifically in Tumbler Ridge. While hiking near one of the region’s tallest waterfalls, he discovered what he initially thought might be a bear track, but upon closer inspection, he speculated it could be a dinosaur footprint. At a new interpretive geocentre, experts confirmed it was likely from a small iguanodon or hadrosaur, plant-eating dinosaurs that lived around 100 million years ago. Tumbler Ridge, recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2015, is renowned for its rich paleontological site, boasting thousands of fossil discoveries, including dinosaur tracks and bones from various prehistoric species. The area has evolved from a coal mining town into a hub for paleontology research and tourism.

Why It Matters

The Tumbler Ridge area is significant for its geological and ecological history, with a UNESCO designation highlighting its importance. Since the early 2000s, public discoveries of fossils have led to increased interest in the region, with thousands of footprints and bones unearthed. This has transformed Tumbler Ridge into a key destination for paleontological research, attracting visitors from around the world. The community’s efforts in fossil preservation and education have further enhanced its reputation, positioning it as a leading site for understanding ancient ecosystems in Canada.
