What You Need to Know
• In July, approximately 27 million metric tons of sargassum were recorded in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico.
• Mexico plans to invest $115 million to address the environmental and economic threats posed by the seaweed bloom.
• Sargassum levels in the Gulf of Mexico reached 5 million metric tons in June, nearly double the previous year’s record.

Marine scientist Brian Barnes from the University of South Florida reported that large quantities of sargassum seaweed are blanketing the beaches and coastlines of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, creating environmental challenges and impacting tourism. This July, approximately 27 million metric tons of this self-sustaining seaweed were recorded in these regions. The Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt has been expanding since 2011, with contributing factors including agricultural runoff and warming waters. In response to the growing threat, the Mexican government announced plans to invest $115 million to combat the influx of sargassum, which can reach up to 9,000 tons on the worst days. Current collection efforts can only manage 1,200 tons daily, highlighting the scale of the issue.

Why It Matters

The proliferation of sargassum affects both the environment and the economy, particularly in regions reliant on tourism. The increase in sargassum blooms has been linked to agricultural runoff and climate change, which have altered oceanic conditions. Since 2011, the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt has been expanding, leading to record levels of sargassum in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. The significant investment by Mexico underscores the urgency of addressing this environmental challenge, as local economies face potential declines in tourism due to the unsightly and foul-smelling seaweed.
