Two men, Val Duquenne and Thomas Clark, had their bikes stolen while on a charity ride in Winnipeg to raise awareness for men’s mental health. The duo, ages 24 and 23, respectively, had their bicycles secured with a U-lock that was cut off when they stepped away for a brief interview at a local studio. Upon their return, they discovered the theft, which left them shocked and disappointed. Their bikes, valued at approximately $15,000 combined, were community donations, with one given to Duquenne by a veteran. They have been on their “Men Don’t Ride Alone” trek since June 22, starting in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and raising $6,500 for Movember Canada, with a goal of $250,000. Following the theft, they filed a police report and are appealing for help on social media to recover the stolen bikes.

Why It Matters

Bike theft is a prevalent issue in Winnipeg, with at least five cyclists’ journeys being cut short in the past decade due to similar incidents. The Winnipeg Police have acknowledged this ongoing problem as a “property crime of opportunity” and encourage residents to register their bikes through Project 529 to help deter theft. This incident highlights the vulnerability of cyclists in urban areas and the impact of crime on community-focused initiatives, especially those aimed at raising awareness for important social issues like mental health. The theft has prompted discussions about safety and security measures for cyclists, as well as the need for increased support for community fundraising efforts.
