Essential items for healthy living cost double in remote WA communities

Families in remote Western Australian communities face significantly higher costs for essential items compared to those in Perth, with prices reaching up to twice as much. A study conducted by The Kids Research Institute Australia focused on the cost and availability of crucial goods in remote Aboriginal communities within the Kimberley region. A basket of essentials, including hygiene products and fresh produce, ranged from $39 to $48 in local stores, while the same items were priced at $20 in Perth and $22 in Broome. The study also found that essential items were only fully available 57% of the time across 23 stores, with basic first aid and hygiene products frequently out of stock. Lead researcher Stephanie Enkel highlighted the concerning implications of these findings, emphasizing the need for policy changes to address price and availability disparities.

Why It Matters

The disparity in the cost and availability of essential goods in remote communities has significant health implications, particularly in light of a recent diphtheria outbreak in the Kimberley, which has recorded 194 cases this year, predominantly affecting the Aboriginal population. Diphtheria can spread through close contact and contaminated items, making access to hygiene products and basic health necessities critical. Historical data shows that remote communities often experience higher costs for basic goods due to logistical challenges and limited market competition. Addressing these inequities is essential for improving health outcomes and ensuring that all Australians have access to the resources needed for a healthy lifestyle.
